Singapore most wanted fugitive was reported to have surfaced recently, implicated in phone extortion cases whilst masquerading as an officer from the local housing authority (HDB).

A visibly embarrased HDB spokeperson See Buay Eng acknowledged another major breach in security of another Singapore civil service office.

Further to Mas Selamat trying to pass off as a HDB officer, it was also reported that he tried to impose as a Tax officer, offering bogus F1 and Old Trafford tickets as incentive for filing taxes on time. A newly sweared in citizen who declined to be named said, "I was thinking how cool is my new country! Free F1 admission and chance to see my favourite soccer team live? To think I was actually hoping in my heart that they will give out pair of ticket instead of one just so I can share my happiness with my boy."

The Singapore Police Force has roped in the help of FBI, Scotland Yard and Sony Ericsson to reconstruct the recorded calls made by the wanted man. These information shall be slowly released to the public in stages in the vein of early public disclosure.

The local Police Commisioner raised an intriguing question, "Our Home Team is amazed by Mas's resilience for evading capture for so long, and most importantly his ability to be able to charge his handphone in his alleged hiding places of forests."

Singapore. The man-on-the-run has taken on a new name and disguise. Reporters note that in the latest development to Singapore's most extensive manhunt to-date, Mas Selamat Kastari was last heard to be at one of the local branches of the Housing and Development Board. A witness who only wanted to be known as 'Just Ho' had this to say, "This guy said he was Rashid from the Loans Department. He wanted to con me of 50 Ringgit! I guess he was desperate for some spare change, and probably thought he was in Malaysia or something." Reporters at the scene understand from the authorities that Mas posed as an officer from HDB, and he was taking bribes to assist in loan approvals.

"I suspected something was wrong when he got nervous. He exposed himself when he mentioned something about feeling guilty going for prayers, and he wanted to 'do some good'. So he approved my loans without taking any bribe from me. Actually he was quite nice and apologetic. I might just buy him a cup of coffee." Just Ho said.

There was no further comment from the HDB office, although reporters understand that a Board of Inquiry is being set up within the organisation, consisting of experts in housing loans and terrorist telecommunications from Britain and America. "We will leave no stone unturned and we will get to the bottom of the security lapse. We shall report the findings in Lianhe Wanbao when we can establish how Mas got into the branch office and pretended to be an officer." Spokesman for HDB, See Buay Eng commented.

Police Commissioner Kah Dian Wei assured the public that the matter was being looked into, "Fortunately HDB has voice recordings of the conversation." The public is advised to stay vigilant and to report if there are any suspicious Rashids who might make phonecalls asking for 50 Ringgit. Details of his raspy voice will be confirmed and released to the public in the next 10 days.

Expensive gear = Better athlete?

Was at a dinner with a bunch of hardcore triatheletes last sunday. Conversation was expectedly about multi-sports, event/ training stories and 2girls1cup.

No offence but I felt that some stupid statements were made:

1. Expensive gears make better sportspeople
True enough, a pair of branded shoes beats a pair of Batas anytime for running. Better technology helps to prevent unecessary injuries and make training more enjoyable. Dri-fit attire allows for cooler exercise time and I swear by them now. I used to jog only in SAF PT kit and SAF-issues NB shoes. They were ok but I didnt like to exercise in them too often but one thing for sure, they are still good enough to help you complete a long distance race.
Expensive or branded gears to me are seriously not paramount to better results. They are simply aids to help me exercise safely and enjoyably.
It's like equipping a layman with a high end PC loaded with sophisticated programs and an engineer with just a scale rule, pencils and paper. End up, the layman will just be playing games with the PC while the engineer will still be able to churn out blueprints for a nuclear station.

2. I will be better if I train like the elites.
Don't think so. We all have different physical attributes and no 2 caps fit the same. Knowing our bodies well is important in order not to push it too hard too fast. Depending on our physical abilities, we should train appropriately and push our own limits one step at a time. My reason for not attempting the full marathon this year was because I was confident of my own body yet at the time of signing up. Also, I didn't want to struggle through 42km in 6-7 hours. I won't be jumping into a high mileage training program suggested by a seasoned athlete for sure. I shall heap on the mileage bit by bit at my own pace. All the races will be my own race after all. Maintain a strict discipline and all will fall into place for sure.

Race your own race and train at your own pace. Of course it's not wrong to dream. First HIM by 2009, I will like to make that a reality, at my own pace of course.

Khon Kaen Marathon 08

I have made up my mind. I'm going to sign up for Khon Kaen Marathon for my first full.
After slacking for a week after SCSM, I shall resume my alternate 10 & 5km daily runs with at min 25km weekend runs. This shall be a test of my will-power.

The target is to finish KKM under 5hr. I've made a promise to myself to complete SCSM 08 in 4:30. I can do it!

Completed my first official half marathon (under my own name & without taking cab) last sunday. Overall it was a good run and the trainings I've put in paid off. Managed to shave almost 30 min off my AHM timing by clocking in 2:24 (self-timed and not too far off).

Felt horrible the morning before leaving for the race, lau sai twice even before stepping out of the house. Most likely due to over-binging in Bintan over the weekend. Must seriously allow for quality rest time and proper diet before a long distance event in the future.

After meeting up with TCM and gf in front of Park Royal hotel @ Beach Rd, took a brisk walk to the start line at the Esplanade bridge. Alas, at the starting line, tide began to rise and dam threatened to breach. Couldn't find an appropriate tree or bush as the first part of the race was in the CBD. Finally, reached first water point at 3km mark and decided to queue for the toilet. Long wait but quick dump, i stopped my timer during this pit stop. Hence, my official timing was 10min more.

Resumed my run, lost a bit of momentum for the next 2km but slowly picked up pace again after the 10km mark (1hr:10min). Race discipline this time was to take long fast strides when I need to walk but I couldn't maintain my hydration discipline and still took too much fluid at almost every water points. However, no stitches experienced.

There were a lot of bottlenecks along the way and I did spend considerable amount of effort to zip-zag through the crowd. Finally saw Janice at the last water point, followed her pace all the way back to the Padang. Found some reserved energy somewhere and did a sprint down the last 100m stretch.

Felt good and strong for this race, completed with no complaint or groans from the body. Must step up training now for my next first FULL marathon.

Went for my swim trial yesterday at Yishun SAFRA.

41min for 1.5km in the pool! Exceeded the cut-off by 1min!

There are always many reasons why failure happens:

1. I did only 1km for training prior to this. It's been 13 years since I last swam such a long distance, after dislocating my shoulders
2. Wrong swim trunk. I grabbed the wrong pair on the way out. Instead, was wearing this cotton ARENA tights that is one size too large! My backside was in danger of being exposed when I kick off the wall. Hence, I lost some valuable seconds for not kicking off to preserve my modesty.
3. There was a babe in bikini swimming in the open lanes next to me. I slowed down to be in view of camel toes. Yes, I is cheekopeh. haha

Hence, I shall:
1. Train harder. My target will be min 3km every week after SCSM and right up to my next swim trial. I will need help to improve my technique too.
2. Buy a proper pair of SPEEDO trunks. Shall get the smallest size available to make my body streamlined. :P Getting a pair of new goggles that don't leak should help too.
3. Use dark-coloured goggles or be blind as a bat to avoid external distraction. Shall try to practise sonar navigation.

I WILL PASS IT NEXT TIME ROUND!

Training (or lack of it) update
I went for my first swim training last Sunday at Hougang Pool. It was a horrible session as the pool was packed like a sardine can. Wasted more energy "siaming" people than swimming properly. In the end, swam 20 laps and left the pool in a huff.

After that, went for a run straight. First BRICK! woohoo.Did 12km unknowingly because I remembered the distance wrongly from MapMyRun.

All these while I was trying out my new HRM. It didn't work properly in the water so I won't try using it for swim training again.

I burnt 1,400 kCal during my run. I can hear my FATS sizzling away into oblivion already. :)

Running in Punggol

Jovene & hubby invited us (mostly from #ahhhhhhhh IRC channel eons ago) for a potluck at their new place in Punggol.

Decided to do a short distance run in my new NB gear (bought at NB warehouse sale) and 1 day old HRM.

Nice, cool and flat run around Punggol district. Distance covered was about 7km, I did some loops here and there to make up for the distance.

Total calories burnt was 500 kCal. Not too bad. One bad thing about the HRM, I pay too much attention to it and am bothered to find out that the my HR hovers above 155 most of the time. I had to slow down a few time to bring it down to 145-153.

Will need to study heart rate training in more details and perhaps adjust my fitness setting. The problem was that I wasn't event panting or feeling tired when I ran. Perhaps I should have taken more fluid beforehand to hydrate properly.

Collected the SCSM racepack last saturday with ChenMunn and gf.

After that we headed to the Polar store to buy my first HRM. Ended up spending $277 on the F55 in Lava Aluminum! Now I can count calories and clocked my training properly. Downside is the footpod package is out of my budget. I will still need to rely on MapMyRun to "agar agar" plan/ check my training distance.

Horror story. Being the cheapo that I am, I tried to get coerced some free gift from Chen Munn's friend Adrian whom he was having a conversation with. I only came to realise later that he's Singapore fastest ironman! *gulp* Better keep my mouth shut next time at such places.

10+ days and counting

My second 1/2 marathon coming and training so far has been satisfactory. Short(5-6km) and Long(10-12km) on alternate days with 1-2 days off per week.

Slow but steadily, I'm starting to feel good about my own body and stamina level. Aching or sore knees are no longer issues but my dehyration rate is still too fast, I think.
My 2L hydration pack does wonder during my long run. But carrying it makes me look like ninja turtle.

The NB dri-fit are starting to stink even after washing from over-usage. But its all good. I'm getting some new Adidas gear at 30% discount from a lobang gotten over last weekend. Woohoo!

Next Tues is my swim trial for Sg biathlon. No swim time clocked yet. I'm dead meat. Thank god for the 3 trials allowed though. I will make it, I promise.

There's gonna be a swim trial as a pre-requisite for this event.
My training routine up till SCSM 07 shall now comprise of swims between runs.

50m x 30laps at Yishun Country Club on 27th Nov. Hopefully I don't get my biathlon registration rescinded for for failing to clear 1.5km water in 40min.

I really wanna take part in this race.

I've taken up running/ jogging quite seriously of late. Since jogging on a regular basis from May, I've completed Army Half Marathon (21km) and NB Real Run (15km) so far. Not too bad for a fat slob like me.

Next on...Stand Chart Marathon, 21km again. I need to be very comfortable with 21km first before I go for my first full marathon.

So I was reading up on Terry Fox' s Marathon of Hope. A sudden sense of guilt filled me up when I recalled fooling around at Terry Fox Run 2005. I shall take my future Terry Fox runs & races seriously, in dedication of this brave young man who spreaded his love all around.

What have I been up to?

It's been a good 8 months since I last wrote. Just an update on my current career situation. I'm no longer a tunnel engineer on the Circleline project. I joined Maunsell Consultants (Singapore) in March 07. Less field engineering and desk-bound now.

Took a painful pay cut and still feeling the pinch. Why may you ask? Part of my career development plan I would say. Join a consultant, get some design portfolio under my belt and finally get my Professional Engineer accreditation.

5 years ago, I would never have imagined I could be so close to being a Professional Engineer considering how I struggled during my undergraduate years. Still, the end is near I pray.

This career transition was tough during the first 3 months. Having to pick up the pieces of engineering design after so long wasn't easy. Especially when my supervisor/ mentor wasn't too helpful, I struggled badly and was on the verge of giving up several times. Having a different array of colleagues didn't help much as well. Everyone is so prim, proper and clever in a consultant office, totally different from the tough-talking people I used to deal with on site. But all is well, managed to make some good friends and is very much settled in now.

Right now, I'm working on the Common Services Tunnel, a myriad of tunnel housing utilities pipes and cables for the new downtown development at Marina. Seems like I will be dogged by underground work for the rest of my career if I remain in civil engineering. When will I see "sunlight" again?

My closest encounter with Palmy

Let me talk about my trip to National Stadium last year to catch Palmy 'live' in Singapore!

Tampinese played Chon Buri FC on 26 Nov 06, special guest appearance by Palmy to hype and liven up the post-match atmosphere.

Managed to convinced simon to tag along. Reached the stadium early, bought grandstand ticket ($8)...nothing less.

Kids at the gate refused to let us in early, so we decided to hang around the steps for a fag. simon decided to do some shooting for elson's wedding video, a decision that I regret for the rest of my life.

While smoking....the sound system from within the stadium came alive. Could hear "Tick Tock" in the background. Wow...getting very excited. Sound check. At the second "soundcheck" song, we finally decided that they are getting enough practice and made our way into the stadium. Simon decided to take a leak while I made my way to the grandstand.

Wah lau! the whole stadium was almost empty. Only people around were the helpers and police. The poor Thai early-bird supporters were at the East gate. And there....Palmy and her band set up on the shabby grass patch right next to the track. And guess, what? The "soundcheck" songs we heard earlier were actually part of her gig!

I flew down the steps and sat at the very front row by the ledge, about 20m from Palmy! Palmy was her usual bouncy self, walking up and down the track behind while singing and waving to her fellow country people at the other side of the stadium. After 2 more songs since I got in, she said: "Byebye! chan kup krung tep leow"

Ma de....wtf??? $8 for 2.5 songs. Singapore FC had thoroughly disgraced themselves with such poor organization and planning. Mind you, Palmy is a superstar in Thailand. She must have felt very sian when she saw the turn-out.

Sorry for disappointing you na, Palmy. Kor tod krup. Please come back to Singapore again. I kid teung you mak mak! Hope you still remember the 2 guys asking you to pose for the camera. I was the one in Red Bull t-shirt.

Diamonds are forever??

Not anymore, perhaps, if you had watched "Blood Diamond". Felt like "Departed 2" for Leonardo Dicarprio. Replace urban jungle with African jungle. The frown stays and the angst in him still very high. Of course, he still didn't get the girl in the end. Oophs...spoiler. Jennifer Connelly is still gorgeous. Do you remember her as little Sarah from Labyrinth??

Overall, I still enjoyed the movie very much. It's definitely worth departing with ya $8 for 2.5hrs of non-stop action. Catch it in at the theatre but still get the ~~pirated~~ DVD for keepsake. Don't forget to bring your girlfriend along for the movie. Might save you 3 months worth of salary if you intend to propose soon. If you are already married, curse under your breath why the movie was not out earlier.

Would be a good idea to make this movie part of the ~~social engineering~~ moral education program for women. Only then (hopefully) they will see through the glitter of the little stones, blood stains of innocent human lives.

First foray into Thai pop

I made my first trip to Thailand in 2004. Armed with phrases my thai workers taught me, I though I'd rule in the Land of Smiles. Sadly, I did not.

My nokia phone's only media function was the radio then. I kept hearing this song being played over the airwaves. It has got this sad melody and I concluded then that it must be a sad love song. Indeed it was. Typical thai fare with predictable cheesy contents. The formula works this way.

"Girl/Guy is sad because Guy/Girl left Girl/Guy. Girl/Guy cries all the time and so it goes..."

It was only after one year that I managed to get hold of the mp3 and understood the lyrics. I did a mean cover of the song by memorizing the whole song. Some of my friends got to enjoy it during a 2005 X'mas party@Ritz. I do have a mp3 of this cover and you can request for it. My pleasure to share with you my angelic voice.

Easy listening song by Palapol & Punch (one of my favourite Thai artistes).

The guy sings with a rich and baritone-ly voice. A nice change from the soft, almost ah gua-liked speech made by most thai guys. Punch is definitely a Sweet Young Thing whom I was quite crazy over for a period of time. I'm a proud owner of all her albums :) Just my luck to have missed her concert last year. Check out sweet girl from Chulalongkorn university(i imagined).

Dtaa daeng daeng means swollen or red eyes. Song tells of this girl teasing his brother who seems to be crying , whom probably just had a heartbreaking episode. Cute depiction of sibling rivalry. Kids annoying the hell out of their elder siblings. Try bringing some of these memories back while listening to the song (with translation of course!). Enjoy!

Sex at the stairwell

Yeah! some stupid IT admin used a stupid password for their wireless network. Now I get to go online at work. Not for long I'm sure...

Anyway, went to a housewarming party just now. The bros found this nice little spot (at the stairwell) as a smoking corner. Damn HDB architects should be banged (or praised?) for installing doors to the staircase in HDB flats! What a waste of money. One reason for jacked up public housing prices?

Back to the point of sex at the stairwell. So this stairwell is very strategically designed. It faces the bathroom windows of the opposite block and concealment is further enhanced by the stupid door. Since the lifts stop at every floor, the chances of the staircase being deserted in approximately 98% per day (assume 0.5 hr for the cleaners). What a safe place to have sex if you haven't tried humping at a stairwell yet. Try asking those school kids who "shared" their staircase-sex videos how it feels. It must be good or they wouldn't be doing it ya? Don't forget to record your adventure for "sharing". It will be my pleasure to review it.

Oh....this haven is near Old Airport Road market. Go explore. Make haste while the concrete floor is still clean. :)

I love digging! I didn't care about the see-saw or swing during playtime when I was still <5 yrs old. I always had my little spade and pail and I just dug and dug and dug...as far as I could remember .

At NUS, I often told everyone how much I'd love to be a sewer engineer, constructing sewer pipes that will carry everybody's shit. I think that's the point when I started to get so much shit in me (or was it earlier???) A twist of fate (I'll elaborate on this in the future, maybe) got me into the Civil Engineering Department and that was the point of no return.

I started off with L&M Geotechnic working on this underpass project in downtown. It goes underneath Pickering Street connecting to the Great Eastern Building. I don't think nobody uses it anyway. White elephant.

Highlights of this job:
1. Fucking tunnel collapsed! Caving in 2 lanes that serve traffic into the CBD from Chinatown. Not forgetting the massive bundles of fibre optic cables coming out of the Singtel building right next to the site. I was scared shit-less. I could have been buried if I had stayed in the shaft longer that day, I swear.
2. Company was going down and my pay was delayed for a month. So I left.

Next on to Tiong Seng Contractors. Here's where people started calling me Engineer Ah Lee. Here's also where i fulfilled my prophecy of constructing shit pipes.

Highlights of this job:
1. Working on the Deep Tunnel Sewerage System for Seletar Link Sewer Contract 1 & Kim Chuan Link Sewer Contract 1. Managed to get into the bad book of PUB for polluting their drains and sinking houses along along Katong Rd and Fort Rd. Just kidding!
2. Seconded to Kajima to work on the prestigious St. Regis Hotel & Residence. If only I can own a piece of that property too. The hotel has part of me in it. I concreted a bag of my shit in one of the foundation structure. Just kidding again! ;P

In 2006, Parsons Brinckerhoff dangled a big carrot and I was naive then. It wasn't a big carrot after all. So now I am, seconded to Land Transport Authority, working on the Circleline Stage 4&5 project as a Tunnel Engineer. Woohoo! My destiny calling...

Now I get to dig tunnels with
a. big ass equipment like the TBM
b. good old way of mining employing this technique known as NATM

Next time when you take MRT to NUH for checkups due to any of the following reasons:
a. Unfilial kids
b. No $$ to take cab etc.

Hopefully I will keep on going with this new blog. It's time to keep some memories of myself. Maybe in the distant future, aliens will get to access this, find me interesting enough and revive me for a pet.

This might also be a good platform to garner more local interest in Thai-pop! Woohoo......one of the best music scene in the world. Hopefully it will be bigger than J-pop or K-pop. Come on...like most J-poppers and K-poppers actually know what the Japs & Koreans are singing. Just sit back and enjoy thai goodness with an open mind. (That is of course provided people actually bothers to read my rubbish)
